Chemical Peels for Erasing Summer Sun Damage

One of the best ways to quickly see dramatic changes in hyperpigmentation (brown spots) and lines in the skin is to have a chemical peel.

Do you ever feel like around mid-July to early August you stop to take a look in the mirror and start to notice a few additional brown spots paired with some signs of dehydration showing up? Well, these some of the repercussions of all that summer fun in the sun showing up on our skin.

Fine lines and wrinkles may be worth it to have spent all those fun days by the pool, beach, and lake, but now you really should take the time to repair all of that damage.

Before we start to repair the skin we must make sure it is still being protected. Although you are returning to longer hours in the office or are inside at school doesn’t mean that you can forgo your sunscreen. It is always recommended to wear an SPF 30 on your face daily because UV rays can still cause damage, even in just small stints of direct sunlight.

Chemical peels range in strength and downtime so below is a quick breakdown on some of the stronger chemical peels offered at Oculus.

For anyone who is new to chemical peels, the Refine Peel from Jan Marini and the Illuminize Peel from SkinMedica are designed for individuals of all skin types that are seeking results from a minimum number of peels. These peels will cause your skin to undergo a minor amount of flaking around the mouth area and make you slightly more sensitive to the sun, so a good sunscreen is a must for the week following.

If you are ready to move up to something a little stronger and are willing to put up with additional peeling, redness and flaking, then consider a Clarify Peel, Vitalize Peel, Transform Peel, Rejuvenize Peel or TCA peel.

These chemical peels are designed to improve skin texture, age spots, fine lines and wrinkles and more.

They are all very predictable with peeling lasting from 2-3 days and flaking remaining up to a week to 10 days.  You can wear makeup while peeling and it is important to use extra moisturizer and sunscreen during that time.

Depending on the strength of the peel you can repeat treatments anywhere from every week to every 6 weeks and most peels should be repeated in a series of 3-6 to achieve maximum results.

And don’t worry, chemical peels may cause a little sensitivity during the treatment, but really there is little to no discomfort.
