Kybella: The FDA-Approved Solution to That Pesky Double Chin!

Let’s face it; no one wants a double chin. It doesn’t matter if you’re a man or a woman, young or old—we all want to get rid of that pesky extra fat under the chin. Surgery used to be the only option, but there’s now another option for those seeking permanent removal of fat cells. It’s Kybella!

Here’s a video of Dr. Cole discussing the benefits of Kybella and providing clarity about where this treatment fits amongst surgical procedures like liposuction or neck lifts:

Kybella is a great new injection product by Allergan—makers of our beloved Botox—manufactured to improve the appearance of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), also called “double chin.” Kybella is the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment that contours and improves the appearance of submental fullness.

The active ingredient in Kybella is deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath your chin, Kybella causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat, which means your “double chin” is gone for good!

When coming in for Kybella, the first thing you will do is discuss with the doctor your treatment plan tailored to the fullness of your “double chin.” This will determine how many treatments you need for maximum effectiveness. Many patients see visible results with two to four treatments, but some may need treatment up to six times.

Kybella treatment consists of multiple injections under the chin depending on the severity of the stored fat. These injections are mapped out prior to the injection with a grid, and they are tailored to the unique shape of your under-chin area.

Of Kybella’s few side effects, the most common are swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness, and areas of hardness around the treatment area. But of course, all side effects diminish with healing.
